In early 2025, Crossref adopted a programs-based approach to bring related activities together under shared goals. In our latest blog, we reflect on how the first quarter went, what we learned, and how this new way of working is helping us stay focused on delivering value for our community.

Version 5.4.0 of our metadata schema is now available. Members can add publication types to citations, supply version numbers across content types, and flag preprints as withdrawn or removed. Other updates include expanded language codes, more archive location options, and support for up to 100 ISBNs per item. A transition guide, schema files, and full documentation are available. Next up: expanded contributor roles and support for CRediT.
As we’re busy developing the schema further, we’re now looking to set up a new Metadata Advisory Group. If you have experience using Crossref metadata—through deposits, APIs, or analysis, consider applying now.

We recently held our first in-person event in Ghana. Topics of discussions included improving metadata quality, using Crossref tools in local workflows, and supporting sustainable open access through stronger infrastructure. Attendees shared real-world challenges and ideas, and expressed interest in forming a local user group.

The Sponsor Program helps smaller organizations become and stay active members of Crossref by providing extra support and handling administrative tasks. In the blog, we share how the program has expanded over the past few years, highlight the important role sponsors play, and outline steps we are taking to review and strengthen the program to better meet the needs of members and sponsors alike.

We’ve released a browser extension to improve how screen readers handle DOI links. The DOI Accessibility Enhancer adds hidden titles to links, so users hear what the link points to—not just the URL. It doesn’t change how links look or work for sighted users. The extension is available now in the Firefox and Chrome web stores.
